Diabetes Support Services, and My Pal Sticky for Kids have provided free diabetes support group meetings and outreach to the Salem area since October of 2007.
More than 10000 people have attended our meetings and health fairs, the majority of whom are uninsured or undersinsured, and all in need of education.
Donated diabetes products are provided to those who have no means to purchase them or seniors who have fallen into the donut hole. Resources for greater assistance are given to those in medical needs.
Our outreach exceeds the local area, having provided education and supplies across the state, nationwide, and as far away as a little girl we helped in South Africa.
We presently hold these free support group meetings:
Diabetes Support 4th Thursday at 7:00 p.m., First Presbyterian Church, 770 Chemeketa Street NE, Salem.
Diabetes in Balance 2nd Wednesday at 2:00 p.m., DSS Headquarters, 1274 Cunningham Lane S.,
My Pal Sticky for Kids provides special events for the entire family on a random basis.
Our evening meetings feature keynote speakers from the medical community. These include endocrinologists, opthalmologists, podiatrists, kidney specialists, orthodontists, cardiac specialists, pharmacists, certified diabetes educators, registered dietitians, pain specialists and more. Providers of diabetic goods and services often offer spotlights.
These meetings have a “Diabetes 101” segment with basic information. Refreshments are provided, along with educational materials and donated supplies, all at no charge to the attendee.
Our afternoon meetings are facilitated by a certified diabetes educator and have a more informal format.
Evening meetings provide fresh fruits and vegetables from Marion Polk Food Share.
It is the purpose of Diabetes Support Services to provide hope to individuals and families living with diabetes, replacing their fear with education and empowerment so they can live full and productive lives.
